How to Reduce Your HVAC Operating Cost

  1. Depending on your lifestyle, change your furnace’s filter every 2 to 6 months. If you have pets, a large family or enjoy open windows, you may need to change the filter every other month. Clean filters allow your system to operate efficiently because the system will run less, which reduces the wear on the motors. New filters keep the air in your home cleaner and healthier.
  2. Annually inspect your air ducts to for leaks. Over time, the taped joints may crack, allowing cooling air to escape into your attic.
  3. Inspect the weather stripping around your doors, windows and baseboards. If cracked or damaged, replace to retain the warm or cool air from escaping.
  4. Installing high efficiency, double pane windows will reduce your energy cost and maintain a more even interior climate.
  5. Check that your home’s attic / exterior walls are well insulated. Insulation with an R factor between 30 and 49 is effective and could save you 10%+ in energy costs.
  6. A quality programmable thermostat will automatically adjust for the proper temperatures, for when you are home or away. Programmable thermostats are an affordable way to control indoor temperatures for optimal comfort and efficiency.
  7. If you do not have high efficiency windows, then block out direct sun with drapes or window shades.
  8. Using ceiling fans will circulate warm or cool air throughout the house to maintain even temperatures, reducing your HVAC usage.
  9. Follow your Utility Company’s suggestion by planning to household functions such as washing, drying and ironing clothes, baking and cooking in the early morning or in the evening.
